Solid Oak

Project Overview

A solid Oak wine cellar, located in the glass ceiling basement. Light an airy, this cellar goes against the reputation of dark and dingy! With plenty of glass, light oak and soft LED lighting, this wine cellar supports the clients request for an attractive cellar with organised storage for their collection. The collection features numerous bottles from Kent vineyards as well as half bottles and large formats.

  • Standard Bottles: 2,100
  • Double Magnum: 16
  • Case Capacity: 36
  • Display Bottles: 48
  • Cube Capacity: 144

  • White American Oak

  • A central tasting table, sitting directly below the glass ceiling
  • Personalised cases upon soft close draws, engraved with the clients personal vineyard emblem.
  • Half bottle storage within scallop racking around the tasting table
  • Display shelving for large format bottles
  • Angled racking spanning all four walls

Fully integral touch-screen water fed temperature control system

A ceiling-mounted temperature control system was discreetly integrated into the design, ensuring the cellar maintains optimal conditions for long-term wine storage. Fitted with an LED display for easy monitoring, the unit is subtle in appearance but plays a critical role in preserving the collection.

Personalised, engraved cases boxes utilising the client's vineyard crest

Bespoke case racks were designed to accommodate the client’s personal collection, with each solid oak case engraved with the vineyard’s emblem. Built from the same oak as the surrounding joinery, the cases ensure long-term storage while maintaining a unified aesthetic.

Glass topped tasting table, seen directly below the glass ceiling

The central tasting table features a glass top, allowing clear visibility of label-facing bottles stored directly beneath. These are laid horizontally within bottle recesses carved into the oak surface. On either side, scalloped racking has been adapted to house the client’s half-bottle collection, integrating additional storage into a functional centrepiece.

Individual, large format bottle, oak display stands

To accommodate the varying dimensions of magnum and double magnum bottles, custom display holders were manufactured to fit each bottle type precisely. As large formats can differ not only in capacity but also in shape depending on the wine style, each holder was tailored to support the bottle securely while keeping labels clearly visible.

Wine Cellar Design Information

The brief required a cellar that delivered both practical storage and visual impact. The design specified White American Oak joinery for a clean, natural finish. Storage was designed specifically for the client’s private collection, including numerous branded cases, half bottles, dessert bottles, and large formats up to Balthazars. Small bottles are a rarity for most collectors and Sorrells enjoyed the opportunity to design specific racking to house them, including hand-carved grooved inlays. Sorrells also designed, laser-engraved and built personalised cases for the collection. The cellar includes a central tasting table with a glass top, positioned directly beneath the glass ceiling so it is visible from the upper floor. Glass walls and ceiling elements required precise alignment and careful detailing to maintain structural integrity and presentation quality.
