Located in the open plan kitchen/dining room, this striking installation was conceived as a centrepiece wine cellar, offering a showstopper view from all angles. The client brief focused on creating a highly visible, temperature-controlled space that would house a varied collection while enhancing the architectural character of the interior.
The result is a Crittall-style framed glass cellar, combining solid oak joinery with bold black framing and a ceiling-mounted climate system. The cellar is as much a design feature as it is a functional storage room, elevating both the wine and the space in which it sits.
Surrounding the cellar is a bold, solid oak framework finished in Havana black, designed in a Crittall-inspired style. This architectural enclosure anchors the cellar visually within the room, offering clean sightlines and a contemporary edge. The contrast between the dark framing and natural oak racking adds depth and definition, turning the cellar into a piece of built-in furniture as well as a storage system.
To ensure the integrity of the collection, the cellar is fitted with a ceiling-mounted temperature control system, discreetly integrated into the space to avoid visual disruption. Calibrated to maintain stable conditions between 13–16°C, the system provides a consistent environment suitable for long-term storage of fine wine.
Its ceiling-mounted position allows for even airflow distribution without occupying valuable wall or floor space, preserving the clean lines of the joinery and maintaining full visibility of the bottles. The solution is both efficient and unobtrusive, reflecting Sorrells’ commitment to technical performance delivered through considered design.
The main back wall of the cellar houses the highest concentration of bottles, incorporating a wide range of storage formats:
Standard horizontal racking for maximum capacity
Glass shelving for enhanced visibility
Display shelving for showcasing special bottles within their original cases
Open cubes for flexible or larger-format storage
This multifunctional wall offers both practical use and visual interest.
