White American Oak with Wenge Stain

Project Overview

This project was commissioned by a private client with a clear brief: to create a wine cellar designed first and foremost for purposeful storage, with a particular emphasis on accommodating a large number of original wooden wine cases. The client approached Sorrells for our ability to design cellars around the collection itself, in this case, a substantial holding of boxed wines requiring structured, accessible storage.

While function was the priority, the cellar also needed to sit comfortably within the home’s character. A palette of darker finishes was chosen to create a sense of depth and stillness, giving the space a classic, heritage feel while maintaining a focused, utilitarian layout.

The result is a room that serves the collection without distraction, quietly elegant, storage-led, and built to endure.

  • 1,610 standard bottles
  • 384 bottles within their original cases
  • 6 bottles within single display cases
  • White American Oak
  • Glass
  • Majority of the lower level is soft close draws for original cases
  • Specifically designed angled shelving to hold single bottles, stored within their original box
  • Cubes for maximum capacity storage of a single varient
  • Angled shelving for display purposes
  • Soft LED lighting

Wine Cellar Design Information

The cellar is built from solid oak, stained in a dark finish to match the tone of the home and support the room’s primary function: secure, long-term storage.

The design was centred around the client’s preference for storing wine in original wooden cases. The majority of the lower level consists of soft-close drawers, each sized to fit full cases. This keeps the collection organised, protected, and easy to access.
