Lacquered Black Walnut Basement Wine Cellar

Project Overview

This wine cellar was designed as part of a wider basement renovation in a private London home, which includes a swimming pool, games room, and dedicated wine space. The brief was to create a cellar that would serve as both a functional store for fine wine and a visual feature within this leisure-focused setting.

From the swimming pool, a full-height glass wall creates a direct line of sight into the wine cellar, offering a striking view of the collection. On the opposite side of the glass, the wine racking forms a strong architectural backdrop.

The cellar is constructed in black walnut, finished in a high-gloss lacquer that enhances the grain and adds richness to the space. The reflective surface complements the lighting design and mirrors the polished materials used throughout the basement.

Storage includes a combination of standard horizontal racking, angled display shelves, and bespoke shelving for large-format bottles. Soft-close drawers are used for case storage, with selected drawers featuring indented bases to hold individual bottles securely and prevent rolling.

  • A ‘wine wall’ with glass panels, viewed from the swimming pool
  • Soft close draws for original cases of wine, as requested per the wine collection
  • Standard racking for optimal storage
